NWO VICI - Innovative image reconstruction for extremely low-dose PET/CT imaging:
The latest generation of PET/CT scanners presents significant opportunities for research and clinical applications. However, current image reconstruction techniques have yet to fully leverage these advancements. This project will develop innovative image reconstruction methods that will reduce radiation exposure without compromising accuracy or image quality. We will integrate cutting-edge advancements such as artificial intelligence, and quantum entanglement. This initiative will not only deliver a substantially less radiation dose to patients and healthcare personnel but also broaden the scope of PET/CT across a wider range of clinical indications.

STIR: Software for Tomographic Image Reconstruction:
STIR is the most widely used open-access software for PET image reconstruction. Its main reference publication—Thielemans, Tsoumpas, et al. (2012)—was awarded the Rotblat Medal in 2017 by Physics in Medicine & Biology (IOP & IPEM) for being the most cited article published between 2012 and 2016.
Dr. Tsoumpas is a core member of the development planning team and plays a central role in the ongoing evolution of the platform. He also co-organises the annual STIR Users & Developers Meeting as part of the IEEE Medical Imaging Conference.

CCP-SyneRBI:
Dr. Tsoumpas is a co-investigator in this EPSRC-funded initiative, which aims to develop an open computational platform for synergistic image reconstruction. He is also involved in the related Flagship Project, which focuses on the development of efficient frameworks for spatiotemporal PET-MRI reconstruction, especially for dynamic datasets.
As part of his contributions, Dr. Tsoumpas co-organises Training Schools and Thematic Workshops, and he served as guest editor for a special double issue on Synergistic Tomographic Image Reconstruction in Philosophical Transactions A of the Royal Society: Part 1 and Part 2.
