Building on his experience as a soundsinger and leader of improvising and experimental choirs, Chris Tonelli is currently completing a book project titled Soundsinging: Unconventional Vocal Music and the Problem of the Human. The book will be the first book-length study of this singing practice which grew of out free jazz, sound poetry, and other practices in and beyond the 1950s and 1960s. Singers and improvising choir directors discussed in the volume will include Yoko Ono, Jeanne Lee, Christine Jeffrey, Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton, Paul Dutton, Jaap Blonk, Shelley Hirsch, Anna Homler, Tomomi Adachi, David Moss, Christine Duncan, DB Boyko, and Joane Hétu. Alongside its historical components, the book will offer a theory of the symbolic force of unconventional vocal sound.

He is also working on research on reception of popular music as mimesis. His second book project will utilize case studies from a variety of genres and periods of popular music history to explore the desire to create and experience mimetic music.
