B.E. (Bereket) Messele is a researcher and instructor specialising in (EU) Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and International Criminal Law. In August 2022, he earned his master’s degree in Global Criminal Law from the University of Groningen. Since September 2022, he has been pursuing his doctoral research at the same university, focusing on the interpretation and application of the principle of subsidiarity within EU Criminal Law. Concurrently, he teaches and coordinates courses such as Criminal Procedure Law, International Criminal Law, and a practical course titled ‘Advising on the Execution of ECtHR Judgments’. His research interests include EU Criminal Law measures and examining them from various perspectives, especially the foundational principles of the Union. He is also keenly interested in EU judicial cooperation in criminal matters.
