Experimental Particle Physics with the LHCb Experiment at CERN

The Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN studies the properties of hadrons containing beauty and charm quarks and tests the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics through high precision measurements.
At VSI, my group searches for physics beyond the SM in beauty baryon decays and prepares the experiment for future data taking. The research of my colleague Kristof De Bruyn and me has been recently highlighted in this article.

Lepton Flavour Violation in b Baryon Decays

Lepton Flavour Violation (LFV) is a forbidden signature in the SM, however, it has been observed in neutrino oscillations. We are wondering if we there is also LFV among the charged leptons. This would be an unambiguous sign for physics beyond the SM.
We are investigating the decay of a Lambda_b baryon into a Lambda baryon, a tau and a muon. This is the first time that this search is performed.

Data Acquisition for the LHCb Upgrade 2

The LHCb experiment will receive its second upgrade in the near future. This will enable LHCb to operate at an order of magnitude higher luminosities. Consequently, the data rates of the experiment will increase to a level that the current data acquisition cannot handle anymore.
We are developing a data acquisition system based on the FELIX readout card to cope with the upgrade 2 conditions with focus on the readout of the future vertex locator pixel detector.
