The History-major provides you with a broad view on the past. This gives you insight into our modern day world. How did our society develop? How did this development go in other parts of the world? Certain issues will be discussed: Why do the USA support Israel unconditionally? What were Lenin’s last words? Who walked through the snow for three days to ask the Pope for forgiveness? Why is ‘apartheid’ a Dutch word? How did Africa become the poorest continent? What are the historical roots of the ‘Zwarte Pieten’-discussion? To answer questions like these, historians study several historical periods, and they have developed numerous approaches. This webclass gives an introduction to a number of the most studied historical periods and approaches. These will be discussed through several texts and assignments from the first year of this major. Therefore, the webclass gives you a good example of what the History major in Groningen is like.
During the first three weeks, another historical time period and approach will be discussed every week. In the last week, you’ll be asked to write an essay. You’ll have to hand in the assignments every week, these will be corrected by your webclass teacher. The time periods that we’ll pay attention to are The Ancient World, The Early-modern Time and The Modern Time. Besides that, you’ll learn to work with Dutch and English literature, and you’ll take an online lecture (on a time picked by you!).
Workload and grading
If you want to earn 10 hours, you’ll have to hand in a short essay in week 4 of this webclass. Please keep in mind that you’ll be spending approximately 2,5 hours a week on preparation and online lectures in the first three weeks. The last week, the essay will cost you at least 3 hours. When you finish everything, you’ll get a certificate at the end of the course. If you would like to use this webclass for credits at your own school, you will have to discuss this with your school yourself. For example, you could ask one of your teachers to join the webclass as well, so he or she can evaluate if the webclass’s contents are sufficient for receiving credits.
This webclass provides you with a good overview of what the first year of the History major will be like. You’ll learn what it means to go to lectures, how to interpret texts, and how to answer difficult questions. During the major, you’ll gain other skills, like interviewing, doing archive research and doing library research, as well.
