Discussion Session: Claude and the US military

When:Th 07-05-2026 13:00 - 17:00Where:CIT Smitsborg 5431.0017 Zebra

Anthropic, one of the leading AI tech companies, has recently had a falling out with the US Department of Defense (DoD) after they had urged Anthropic to grant unlimited access to their models for all military purposes. Anthropic refused, and specifically drew the line at the development of fully autonomous weapons and mass surveillance strategies. However, the DoD did not take this well and has since decided to pursue a ban of Anthropic’s technology within the entire US government and all companies that are connected to it.

While some tech companies (like Microsoft) are supporting Anthropic’s case, others (like OpenAI) are stepping in to replace them in providing similar technology to the DoD.

This is a Research Support Hub workshop. The Research Support Hub is a CIT initiative to support all researchers and PhD-candidates throughout the University of Groningen on data management, geo-services, statistics, machine Learning, AI-tools and high performance computing.
