When we refer to sugar in everyday usage, we usually mean granulated sugar, which is extracted from sugar cane and sugar beet. But fruit, maize and other foods also contain sugar.

Sugar is a carbohydrate that plays an important role in our metabolism. It is also a flavouring agent that is added to many different foods. It gives our bodies a lot of energy very quickly, but not the vitamins, minerals and fibres that we need.

The addition of sugars to foods, and especially sugar-rich drinks, contributes to obesity. The calories in soft drinks don’t satisfy your hunger and therefore don’t affect your appetite. This means that you will consume more calories than you need and put on weight. It also increases the risk of dental plaque and cavities. Soft drinks should therefore be consumed in moderation.
