• He explores molecular mechanisms underlying radiation effects, including ionisation, fragmentation, charge and hydrogen transfer, and energy redistribution in isolated biomolecules like DNA and peptides.

• His group studies hydrogen and deuterium interactions with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) ions, relevant for astrochemistry and molecular complexity in space.

• Research also includes radiation-induced processes in biomolecules, such as direct effects on DNA structures and the transfer of charge, atoms and energy in gas-phase systems.

• Schlathölter’s earlier work encompasses molecule–surface interactions and classical trajectory studies in physical chemistry.
