Phil Gale joins our team as professor of supramolecular chemistry
Professor Phil Gale, a leading figure in supramolecular chemistry, will join the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials as Professor in Supramolecular Chemistry, effective January 1, 2026.

Professor Gale is an internationally recognized chemist whose research has advanced the field of supramolecular chemistry, particularly in the design, synthesis, and study of receptors and transporters for anionic species. His work has profound implications for disease treatment and antimicrobial applications.
After earning his DPhil in Chemistry from the University of Oxford (1995), Professor Gale conducted postdoctoral research as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin. He then returned to Oxford as a Royal Society University Research Fellow (1997–1999) before moving to the University of Southampton, where he rose to Professor of Supramolecular Chemistry (2007). In 2017, he joined the University of Sydney, and in 2023, he transitioned to the University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
Scientific Achievements and Awards
Professor Gale’s groundbreaking research has earned him numerous accolades, including:
* Izatt Christensen Award in Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (2018)
* Royal Society of Chemistry Supramolecular Chemistry Award (2014)
* Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2013)
* Royal Society of Chemistry Corday Morgan Medal and Prize (2005)
* DSc from the University of Oxford (2014)
His research focuses on supramolecular receptors and transporters, studying their binding and transport properties in lipid bilayer membranes and their potential to treat diseases by modulating ionic gradients.
