The Netherlands Academy of Engineering (NAE) has installed Moniek Tromp as a new Fellow

11 December 2025

Today, NAE welcomes twenty new members — fifteen Fellows and five Young Engineers — selected from among the Netherlands’ most accomplished scientists, technologists, and innovators in academia and industry. Membership is awarded to individuals who have delivered outstanding contributions in their fields, demonstrated inspirational leadership in major societal transitions, and actively strengthen the role of engineering in society. As the national engineering academy of the Netherlands, NAE is part of global networks such as Euro-CASE and CAETS, connecting Dutch innovation to the international stage.

Moniek Tromp is a leading scientist driving breakthroughs in catalysis, battery technology, and materials science — accelerating the energy transition. Her pioneering work in operando spectroscopy enables real-time insights into chemical reactions and battery processes, powering the development of more efficient and sustainable batteries in collaboration with partners like Volkswagen, BASF, Varta, and Shell.

She plays a key role in major national programs such as BatteryNL, ANION, and the NGF initiative Materials Independence and Sustainable Batteries, helping position the Netherlands as a global leader in battery innovation.

On the European stage, Moniek shapes innovation policy as President of the Initiative for Science in Europe and formerly as a SAPEA board member, contributing to EU strategies for science, sustainability, and technological sovereignty. As past chair of the National Network of Female Full Professors and the Young Academy of Europe, she has also championed diversity, inclusion, and modernized academic career paths through the Recognition and Rewards program.

About the Netherlands Academy of Engineering (NAE)

NAE brings together the leading experts active in technological sciences and applied research and development. Its members come from knowledge institutions and industry, united by a passion for engineering-driven innovation as a means to address many of today’s societal challenges and to safeguard the Netherlands’ economic strength within the European and global context.

About the Appointment Procedure

Fellows and Young Engineers are appointed each year based on nominations from, among others, industry, universities, universities of applied sciences, research institutes, and advisory bodies such as AWTI, KNAW, and NWO. Two independent committees composed of members submit recommendations to the NAE Board, which reviews the procedure and then presents the final shortlist of candidates to all current NAE members.
