Advent calendar - December 18th - Carolina Ibarra Barreno
In the Zernike Institute Advent Calendar, we are presenting 24 short spotlights in December. In these specials, we highlight PhD students, postdocs, and technicians of our research groups - providing a glimpse into their typical day at work. In Episode 18 meet Carolina Ibarra Barreno.

I am working as a PhD student researcher at Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials in the group of Surfaces and Thin Films under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Petra Rudolf. As an experimentalist most of my days start early in the morning to carry out the whole experiment of the day. During the day, I have different activities such as: data analysis, planning next experiments, group meetings and teaching activities.
I am working on the synthesis of nanomaterials as part of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network STiBNite program. This PhD fellowship is mainly focused on the development of tailored materials for sustainable technologies programming functional molecular components through Boron-Nitrogen doping.
The target of my research is to fabricate BNC architectures on metal and insulator surfaces. The synthesized material will have specific physical and chemical characteristics and they must be characterized by different spectroscopies techniques to determine the composition, bonding environment, and electronic structure.
