Research Zernike (ZIAM) Macromolecular Chemistry and New Polymeric Materials Maniar Group

Polymer-based composite materials

Polymers and polymer-based composites are the most common and fastest-growing materials used in engineering and other structurally demanding applications. Their low maintenance, corrosion resistance, lightness, and durability have made them ubiquitous. On the other hand, the success of the polymer and polymer-based composite industry also means that it has an inevitable role in addressing our environmental crisis. To address this sustainability issue, the research group focuses on the development of novel synthesis strategies and polymeric materials. The development of novel environmentally sustainable materials, specifically biobased and biodegradable polymers and their composite, is a major research focus of the group. We combine biocatalysis with precision polymer synthesis to produce materials aimed at multiple applications ranging from packaging and thermally reversible polymeric products to tissue engineering and prosthetics.
