YAG Early Career Researcher Lunch: Allies and Sponsoring with Ineke Sluiter, President KNAW

When:We 07-04-2021 12:00 - 13:30
Where:Online

An often-forgotten factor for success in the professional world is having allies or sponsors who advocate for you: who mention your name, who amplify your voice, who invite you to important meetings, who nominate you for a prize. For some people, having allies happens naturally, but for many, they need to take action to obtain allies because the people around them may not actually be aware of how to be allies or sponsors. Moreover, each one of us can act as a sponsor for peers, and for our students.

In this ECR lunch, we will discuss and brainstorm about how to make allies work for you, and how you can be an ally. The discussions will be kicked off by an inspiring keynote of Ineke Sluiter, Professor of Greek and Latin literature at the University of Leiden and president of the Dutch Royal Society of Science (KNAW), ardent advocate for female academics and young academics.

If you would like to get a head-start, check out the @betterallies twitter account and this TED talk by Melinda Epler on ways to be a better ally in the workplace.

  • Inspirational Talk by Ineke Sluiter: How can you be an ally and ask others to be your allies?
