Summary

This research project is concerned with population decline in North-Netherlands. Since many of the (experienced) effects of population decline are felt on the local level and most decline occurs in rural areas, the project is especially interested in the what happens in villages and towns on the countryside in North-Netherlands. Moreover, in times of budget cutbacks and increased upscaling of services, individuals are asked to come together and contribute to the living environment. This relates closely to social capital and social cohesion. This research therefore focuses on the relation between population decline and social capital in rural towns and villages in North-Netherlands. To tease out this relationship quantitative as well as qualitative methods will be used.
