Description

This PhD research aims to understand the manner in which labour migrants in Goa, India assess their risk of HIV/AIDS. It has been found that in India higher percentages of men have high-risk behaviour and the disease is more common among men than in women. Currently out of four reported cases, three are men (NACO, 2003).

Based on the Census 2001, we find that the migrants from Karnataka are moving from areas with low levels of modernization to areas of high level of modernization. The highest per capita income and the availability of better civic facilities can be considered as one of the pull factors for migration to Goa.

A preliminary qualitative fieldwork was conducted in Goa, from September to October 2003. Further qualitative fieldwork and a locally informed survey were conducted from October 2004 to February 2005.
