Theoretical Particle Physics

The Theoretical Particle Physics group conducts theoretical investigations of the Quantum Universe we live in, in order to understand particle physics at a fundamental theoretical level and to explore connections to cosmology. We investigate the properties of the fundamental forces in Nature at the smallest distance scales, within the framework of the microscopic theory of the strong and electroweak interactions, the so-called Standard Model of particle physics, and possible extensions of it. We pursue this research with present-day and future experiments in mind, both for high-energy and high-precision experiments.

Currently we work on a variety of topics with high international interest, such as, electroweak symmetry breaking and the Higgs sector, the family structure of the Standard Model, strongly coupled theories beyond the Standard Model (BSM), conformal symmetry in gauge theories and AdS/CFT, Lorentz and CPT symmetry violation, new heavy gauge bosons, and “dark photons”. These topics relate to issues at the forefront of cosmology, such as dark matter and the baryon asymmetry of the Universe.

Connections

The Theoretical Particle Physics group has close ties with other theoretical physics groups internationally and within the Netherlands especially through participation in the FOM network Theoretical High-Energy Physics and the Dutch Research School of Theoretical Physics (DRSTP). There are common activities with the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute and Johann Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science, in the context of the Quantum Universe specialization in the MSc Physics program, the annual Quantum Universe Symposium, and shared supervision of Bachelor and Master students.
