Long-Term Perspectives on Human-Environment Relations

Understanding the complex relationships between human societies and their environments involves integrated archaeological and ecological research in Northwest Europe, the Mediterranean and the Circumpolar Regions; the chronological focus extends from Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers through to complex urban societies, and generates uniquely long-term insights into the development of human societies and their impacts and adjustments to local environments. Producing these long-term perspectives is important because they have direct relevance to present-day debates about resilience, vulnerability and how best to plan for long-term social and environmental sustainability.
