Communication, Information & Social Inequality

Digitalization and AI are central to the University of Groningen’s strategic vision as one of four interdisciplinary priorities. The SSH sector plan’s focus on digitalization reflects this commitment, particularly through the ‘Communication, Information & Social Inequality’ theme, where SSH faculties explore three key research areas:

  1. The Digital Government & the Informed Citizen

How can governments communicate effectively in a digital world while ensuring privacy, security, and responsible use of algorithms—without excluding the 2.5 million Dutch citizens lacking digital skills?

  2. Digital Exclusion & Social Inequality
How do we bridge the digital divide? What strategies can reduce digital illiteracy and prevent digital exclusion from worsening social inequality and individual well-being?

  3. Digital Media, Public Debate & Social Cohesion
How do digital platforms shape identity, communication, and social cohesion? What role can reliable news play in combating misinformation and polarization?
