What is the difference between Science Communication, Outreach and/or Public Engagement?

Public Engagement (PE) describes a two-way interaction between the scientist and the public, whereas Outreach describes a one-way interaction, where the scientist reaches out to the public. The past decade, PE is the term that is commonly used in the field to describe all science communication activities. However, the terms are also sometimes used interchangeably.

What is the difference between Public Engagement and Citizen Science?

Citizen Science actively engages the public in research, where the public can help to generate new knowledge or data. Giving the public an active role in research can contribute to increasing mutual trust and understanding.

Why is Public Engagement important for the UG and FSE?

From the UG strategic plan: The UG regards societal impact as one of its primary responsibilities. The implementation and translation of education and research activities for and in society is a cornerstone of the academic system. This interaction with society - public engagement - enriches both education and research.

From the FSE strategic plan: FSE contributes towards a prosperous society through scientific and educational activities. We do so by providing the best possible education to our students, the future leaders inside and outside of academia. But our ambitions go beyond that. FSE aims to have societal impact – to bring about cultural, economic, industrial, ecological, or social changes – through-knowledge utilisation and science engagement.

What can Science LinX do for me?
