Public Engagement Community Event

On 11 November, the public engagement community of the North met at the House of Connections; whether they were PE staff, a policy officer, academic, early career researcher, lecturer, or student, everyone was invited to join, share their updates from their departments, reconnect and exchanged experiences and challenges over lunch.

Public engagement support website
Eva Teuling presented an online public engagement support website. It was developed for the Faculty of Science and Engineering and will soon be available to all UG staff. Whatever public engagement activity you or researchers in your programme are developing, these useful materials can help improve the quality of the output and potentially increase its impact.
Together with her colleague Eva Liminovic, Eva Teuling would like to run a pilot test of the website with a group of researchers from different faculties. If you would like to take part in this test, or if you know researchers who might be interested, please let them know by emailing e.teuling@rug.nl and e.l.liminovic@rug.nl.
UMCG patient panel - involvment is scientific research
Paul van Duuren presented the main takeaways from a survey conducted by the UMCG. In October 2025, the UMCG sent a questionnaire to its patient panel about participation in scientific research. The survey included questions about whether they had ever taken part in research, what their experiences were, their main reasons for participating (or not participating), and which obstacles they encountered during participation.
A total of 1,034 patients of various ages and backgrounds completed the survey. The outcomes provide valuable insights that are also highly relevant for the public engagement community.

Project: Let’s Roll – This Abled City: cinematic storytelling to shift perspectives on disability
In this project, Bettina van Hoven and her team of students created a prototype documentaries about everyday experiences of wheelchair-users. They used different approaches to visual storytelling and ways in which to engage audiences. The project connects first-hand, lived experiences with scientific concepts and cinematic approaches to storytelling. In her presentation, Bettina shared some shifts in approach which followed initial testing. Furthermore, Bettina also suggested some tips for future Seed Fund applicants.
