Recap: Celebrating openness. Impact of open science - 20 February 2025

The event kicked off with a Keynote from Ellen Carbo from ZonMw. Her talk ‘Open(ing) the Science’, shared her perspectives on how Open Science is instrumental in academic research, education and policy, and how funding agencies perceive the role of Open Science. 

Following the keynote, Lightning Talks were presented of the winners of the Open Research Award 2024. On behalf of the entire project team, Julia Munuera Garcia showcased the project, This Abled City: Participatory Research on Accessibility with People with Disabilities, where they explored how accessibility and mobility shape the experience of people with disabilities in the city. This project was done in collaboration with societal partner ‘s Heeren Loo.

Marianthi Tangili presented her project. Identification of age-related CpG sites from longitudinal avian methylomes, which aimed to provide a clean, reproducible dataset for other researchers in the field.

Last but not least, Nadja Brait presented online her project, An open-source solution for finding ancient viral integrations in genomic data.

Finally, we had a Panel Discussion on Impact of Open Science in Academic Policy. With David Cheruiyot representing Young Academy Groningen and Eva Teuling representing Science LinX, we discussed how different Open Science practices are being implemented in Groningen, how they influence academic policy and what the future holds.
