Workshop Epidemics in Medieval and Early Modern Western Europe

In this small symposium epidemics in Medieval and Early Modern Western Europe will be considered from different angles. First, Philipp Schofield will discuss in an overview talk some recent work on the plague and next will go more into famine-related diseases in medieval England. Next, Hugo la Poutré will talk about the consequences several plague epidemics in the decades from 1347 onwards had on the population-size of England. Afterwards, Daniel Curtis will turn to the social and economic consequences of the plague epidemics in the Low Countries, in line with his 2019-2024 NWO-VIDi project on the impact of mass mortality in Early Modern NW-Europe. Lastly, Wouter Ronsijn and Isabelle DeVos will present a micro-study on the epidemics that hit the Flandrian village of Anzegem in 1690s.
