Abstract
What brings American civil rights activists, European conscientious objectors, and Indian Gandhians together in a South Indian ashram? This talk will cover attempts at founding a peace movement with a global reach. What did the participants hope to achieve, and to what extent did they succeed? A broad consensus on the necessary preconditions for peace – decolonization and disarmament – in fact hid crucially different views existing inside and outside of the decolonizing world. How did this impact the ability of peace movements to organize internationally?
