Abstract
Hamilton Richardson was born on St. Martin in 1940, moved to Curaçao at a young age, and went to the Netherlands in 1962, where his life revolved around baseball. He returned to St. Martin in 1989, having left a permanent mark on the Dutch sports world. Richardson became a media spectacle of sorts and was arguably the first Black sports icon in the Netherlands. Through a mediatized biography of Richardson the transatlantic intersections of migration, media, and discrimination in the Kingdom of the Netherlands are revealed, filling a gap in the historiography of postcolonial migrations, as the world of sport is often missing in this field.
About the speaker
Jan Bant is working on his PhD dissertation on baseball, identity, and belonging in the Kingdom of the Netherlands at Radboud University Nijmegen and the University of Curaçao.
