Thinking On Foot: Walking as Research Practice in the Environmental Humanities

When:Th 11-05-2023 19:30 - 21:00
Where:Room A2, Academy building

This is a public panel discussion.

During this evening, Hayden Lorimer (University of Edinburgh), Kyveli Mavrokordopoulou (University of Aachen), and Tânia Esteves Fernandes Cardoso (University of Amsterdam) will present their innovative research which explores running and walking as research practices. How might walking and running facilitate embodied ways of understanding place and place-making in time of climate crisis and environmental decline? And how do we put this methodology in practice, and what do we want it to yield?  Lorimer, Mavrokordopoulou and Estevedes Fernandes Cardoso will engage with these questions in the context of their research on the Freedom lands in Aberdeen, nuclear polderscapes in Belgium and France, and ecocritical awareness in the urban landscapes respectively.

Speakers will have 15 minutes to present their research, after which there will be plenty of time for a discussion.

This evening takes place in the context of the NICA core course “Sensing, Walking, Storying: Intimate Approaches to the Environment” and the exhibition Hamish Fulton: Walking Artist which will take place at Galerie Block C and ARTisBOOK from 21 May – 1 July 2023.

This event is made possible by NICA, ICOG, and Kunstraad Groningen.
