Project Description:
Pottery is an important archaeological material owing to its good preservation and value in typological and chronological studies. Early uses of pottery and later shifts in ceramic traditions are frequently associated with wider cultural and environmental transformations, and distinct pottery styles are also commonly associated with particular lifestyles and modes of subsistence (forager, farmer, herder). However, accurate dating of pottery has always proved difficult. This PhD will undertake direct dating of organic residues recovered from pottery. It will combine molecular and compound specific isotope analysis (CSIA) to determine the biological and environmental origin of organic residues, and then apply compound specific radiocarbon analysis (CSRA) to selected compounds. This will generate high-resolution chronological data for the testing of hypotheses pertaining to the pace and timing of early pottery uptake, as well as to particular cultural transitions and their relationships to wider environmental change.
