State of Emergency

Prof. Andrej Zwitter has published an edited volume on state of emergency examining in detail Legal Theory, International Law, European Law, German and Austrian Law concerning emergency regulations. The book, Notstand und Recht: Im Überblick: Rechtstheorie, Völkerrecht, Europarecht, deutsches- und österreichisches Recht, is written in German and can be purchased here .

The Macedonian Question

Dr Chris Lamont contributed to the edited volume The Macedonian Question: 20 Years of Political Struggle into European Integration Structures, edited by Zhidas Daskalovski and Marija Risteska. Dr. Lamont’s contribution examined transitional justice in post-Ohrid Framework Agreement Macedonia.

Crisis of Legitimacy Conference in Rijeka

Over the 7-8 May 2012 the Research and Ethics in Globalisation Section of Globalisation Studies Groningen (GSG) co-hosted a conference on the crisis of legitimacy facing global governance with the Department of Cultural Studies at the University of Rijeka in Croatia. Contributors from Groningen included Dr. Chris Lamont who spoke on transitional justice in Tunisia, Dr. Vivienne Matthies-Boon, who addressed crony capitalism in Egypt, and Dr. Andrej Zwitter, who spoke on globalizing rights. From Rijeka, Dr. Vjeran Pavlakovic presented on the Occupy Movement in the United States and Dr. Vedran Obucina discussed radical movements in the Western Balkans. Dr. Petar Popovic, from the University of Donja Gorica addressed in the international relations of the Western Balkans in the context of the economic crisis.

On 1 May 2012, Andrej Zwitter will become professor by special appointment in International Relations at the Faculty of Law. The chair has been sponsored by the Netherlands Society for International Affairs (NGIZ).

Andrej Zwitter participated in the World Public Forum ‘Dialogue of Civilizations’ in Rhodes (Greece, October 6-10, 2011) and delivered the welcoming speech on ‘The Future of International Law’ as well as moderating the international law panel on ‘Universal Challenges to International Law’ at the Youth Forum (October 10-14, 2011, Rhodes, Greece).

Transitional Justice in Macedonia
Chris Lamont presented a paper entitled Forging Transitional Justice, the Rule of Law and Democratic Consolidation in Macedonia at the conference “20 Years of Macedonian Independence: Economic, Political and Policy Developments” held on the 15th and 16th September 2011 in Skopje, Macedonia.

Dr. Hassan Bashir visiting fellowship
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Hassan Bashir (Texas A&M University, Qatar) will be a visiting scholar with REG and GSG from May 2011 until August 2011.  Dr Bashir specialises in comparative political theory, international relations and social movements.  He will be presenting a number of special lectures.
