GBB Ph.D. Training Program

GBB provides integrated upper-level undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral training, consisting of practical research training, courses, workshops, and multidisciplinary research projects.

The Ph.D. research and training program leads to a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The goal of the research and training program is to provide the Ph.D. students with an international orientation and prepare them for a scientific or R&D career in biomolecular sciences or biotechnology. The program consists of a 4-years research period and a number of courses and other training activities. At GBB Ph.D. students are expected to obtain at least 16 credit points during the Ph.D. period; these credits are awarded to different training elements.

The training program starts with an Introduction Course, consisting of demonstrations, lectures or workshops given by senior and junior scientists of all GBB research groups. The aim of this course is to inform Ph.D. students about ongoing GBB research programs, to make them aware of the broad expertise and research facilities at GBB, and to introduce the students to the GBB tradition in collaborative research. Furthermore the Ph.D. students will meet their colleagues, who started their projects in about the same period.

Masterclasses also form an important training element at GBB. These short-term courses on specific scientific subjects are organized for Ph.D. students and post-doctoral fellows. Each year dedicated masterclasses are organized, involving a three to five days teaching program presented by renowned experts together with one or more GBB staff members.

GBB also organizes a yearly symposium that serves as a forum where progress of different research projects is presented in oral communications and poster presentations. Traditionally the symposium days are concluded by a guest lecturer, who has made major contributions during recent years in an area that is of interest to GBB. The symposium is held on the last day of the GBB Introduction Course and since 2003 is combined with the annual EGC Symposium , offering all our Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows the opportunity to meet the GBB staff members and guests, as well as their more senior colleagues.
