Study and Training at GBB

With strong roots in the disciplines Biology, Chemistry and Life Sciences, GBB staff contribute to several teaching programs within the faculty. At the bachelor level, GBB staff teach in the curricula of Biology and its major Molecular Life Sciences, Life Science and Technology, and Chemistry (e.g. the track Chemistry of Life). Graduated bachelor students are well-qualified to enroll various master programs in biological, biomolecular, and biomedical sciences.

Further, GBB staff are fully involved in the challenging and comprehensive curriculum Biomolecular Sciences, a selective master program that attracts master students from all over the world. Graduated master students have excellent opportunities to apply for a PhD position in the areas of Life Science, Biochemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, (Bio)Medical Sciences, and Bio(nano)technology, either within GBB or elsewhere.

The primary goal of GBB is to equip its early career researcher with the skills necessary to become pathfinders, trailblazers, explorers, adventures, or leaders, with abilities highly sought after in academia, the private sector or public organizations. This objective is achieved through research conducted in a nurturing environment, complemented by personalized supervision and mentoring from dedicated GBB staff members. GBB also provides interdisciplinary scientific training for its PhD students and postdocs. In addition, the Graduate School of Science and Engineering and the HR department provide professional and transferrable skills training in for instance communication and presentation, language proficiency, scientific and proposal writing, project management and (inclusive) leadership.

Empowerment of postdocs and starting group leaders gears towards improving their own career prospects (networking, training and social events) and is pursued by the dedicated postdoc community of the faculty and various staff networks such the Young Science and Engineering Network (YSEN), Women in Science and Engineering (WISEN), and the Young Academy Groningen.
