Title: Reliable electricity supply in Friesland. Integrating biogas and hydrogen from accumulated wind power for energy storage purposes.

Summary:
Nowadays, it is widely accepted that our society must transition to low carbon energy systems to combat climate change and the dependency on depleting fossil fuels. This transition is prevented by the lack of renewable energy storage mediums that can save energy for seasonal periods of time. For this reason, this study suggests two different designs with the power-to-gas concept being the core function of the proposed systems. In the first scenario, Hydrοgen is provided from surplus electricity by wind turbines through electrolysis process and fuel is obtained by upgrading biogas to biomethane using H2. In the second situation, the same reasoning is applied. However, produced Hydrogen in that case, is oxidized in fuel cells to generate electricity and does not interact with biogas. In this study, it is assumed that the systems would be coupled with Friesland’s electricity grid. Most of the technologies that were chosen are already implemented in standard industrial processes. However, the synergetic effect of all the selected components is still unknown, and one of the aims of this study is to conclude whether such energy storage systems would be feasible to implement in terms of electrical efficiency, sustainability, and economics. The main difference between the two systems consists of the way biogas is upgraded, or from another perspective, the way that fuels are used to produce electricity. Hence, although the proposed options appear to be much similar, this study also investigated the influence that might have minor differences in the configuration of the systems. Overall, evaluation took place as to what extent hydrogen and biogas can play a role as energy storage mediums, as well as, which of the two proposed systems is performing better compared to each other in terms of efficiency, environmental sustainability and financial feasibility.
