PhD training programme
The PhD research and training programme leads to a PhD degree in Science and Engineering. The goal of the research and training programme is to train PhD students to become independent researchers suitable for a scientific or R&D career in Engineering. The programme consists of 4 years of research training, courses and teaching duties. At the end of the PhD trajectory, a PhD candidate will submit and defend their thesis.
The thesis minimum requirements for ENTEG in addition to the introduction and conclusion chapter are 3 research chapters of publishable quality. The principal investigator has the authority to define more stringent or additional requirements, in alignment with the standards of their research field. These specific thesis requirements, as set by the principal investigator, will be clearly stated in the TSP and will be monitored by the institute. Other regulations related to the PhD trajectory can be found in the RUG PhD Rules and Regulations document.
Applying for a funded PhD position within a set research theme
PhD positions usually come with an awarded research grant of one of our principal investigators. Such PhD-positions come throughout the year and are within a set research theme or are part of a larger research project. Such positions are advertised at the University website under ‘Job opportunities at the University of Groningen’. If you wish to apply for a position that is posted on the Job Opportunities website, you will need to follow the procedure described in the advertisement.
Apply for a PhD position with your own scholarship funding
PhD candidates who would like to do their PhD in our institute and have secured funding for a PhD project or are seeking for support for a grant application are advised to contact the PhD coordinator (m.nuzzolo rug.nl) . She can assist in finding a potential supervisor. This supervisor will be responsible for judging whether the student is academically prepared to do a PhD in his or her research group. The PhD coordinator may also assist excellent candidates who wish to apply for a grant at a foreign funding agency by providing the necessary acceptance letter of the hosting institute.
