Title: Towards LES of multiphase flows with moving interfaces

Abstract:

Whereas LES of single-phase flows is widely used in CFD, LES of two-phase interfacial flows remains a largely unexplored area since successful application of LES to two-phase flow problems should account for the unresolved complex interaction between turbulence and interface dynamics. The presence of the interface causes additional terms to appear in the LES formalism unknown from single-phase flow.

In the first part of the talk different filtering possibilities are discussed in order to derive the LES governing equations in the framework of the one-fluid formulation. Results from a priori analysis of DNS data of a spatially developing Diesel jet exhausting in gaseous atmosphere are presented and discussed next. This provides information on the order of magnitude of the different model expressions and modelling ideas can be tested and developed. Experiences with a-posteriori LES of primary jet breakup will be presented in the last part of the talk. Existing and new modelling ideas will be analyzed and the interaction between the different unclosed terms will be highlighted.
