Title: Numerical methods for contact geometry and their applications

Abstract:

Contact geometry allows to give a geometrical formulation to certain physical systems that do not preserve energy. Exploiting such structure, we can define geometric numerical methods which show interesting properties when compared to the more commonly used ones. In the colloquium I will present a new class of geometrical splitting methods adapted to contact systems, and some of their properties. Finally, I will show how they can be applied to some astrophysical problems such as the modified Kepler problem, the Lane-Emden equation and the Spin-Orbit problem.
