Title: Solutions sets of polynomial equations and local cohomology

Abstract:
Suppose you have a system of polynomial equations, and look at its solution set; you may ask if this set can be obtained with less equations than the ones you start with. This is, in general, a very hard problem if your polynomials have degree at least two. One possible technique to partially tackle this issue is through the so-called local cohomology groups. The goal of this talk will be, not only to review this important technique, but also to see how to use it to provide partial answers to the above problem; moreover, we also show how these groups, regarded in a certain way as solutions of a system of partial differential equations, become much more accessible to handle, both from the theoretical and from the computational point of view.
