Titel: Some developments in forensic face recognition

Abstract:

The application of biometrics in forensics is not straightforward. Biometric recognition may help the police to find potential suspects, but when it comes to establishing the evidential value of biometric traces the task becomes complicated. In this presentation I will highlight the work done in our group, in collaboration with the NFI, on forensic face recognition. I will address the challenges of low-resolution face recognition, and forensic face comparison.

It will be illustrated that the recognition of real faces at a low resolution – captured at a distance – is a much harder problem than just recognizing faces at a reduced sampling rate. Some solutions will be presented. Regarding forensic face comparison I will discuss methods developed to support the forensic examiner, in particular methods based on comparing facial marks.
