Title: Automated Extraction and Interactive Visualization of Line-Like Structures from Electron Tomograms
Abstract:
Electron tomography enables the 3d visualization of biological material at the nanoscale.
Progress in sectioning makes it possible to acquire tomograms from many kinds of cells and tissues.
The comprehensive interpretation of such tomograms provide unprecendented insight into the molecular
organization of cellular landscapes.
In this talk I will discuss the indirect 3D visualization of biological material from electron tomograms.
By focussing on the specific problem of the extraction of line-like structures from electron tomograms
(for example microtubles and actin filements), I will discuss some properties of electron tomograms,
illustrate why many classical segmentation methods do not suffice, and show how an alternative method
based on 3D template matching and tracing can be used for the visualization of such line-like structures.
Furthermore, I will discuss a novel user interface, based on 3D printed props and hand gestures, which
allows for the interactive analysis of the line-like structures.
