Title: eHealth for the Citizen for Better Privacy and Data Protection
Abstract:
The benefits of accumulated medical records are self-evident, but we need to spare a thought, too, for the amount of risk they create. Privacy and protection of personal data is of the utmost importance both to the European Union and to each of its Member States - and maintaining the privacy of sensitive health data is becoming an ever greater challenge, particularly in the area of cloud computing. Is it possible to preserve privacy at all nowadays? Do Member States consider the possibility that the level of data protection may influence whether data becomes open? This session will provide an opportunity to discuss open healthcare systems and the possibilities offered by accumulated data throughout Europe. The question asked is whether is at all possible to preserve privacy nowadays; this does not refer only to medical data but to all kinds of data regarding the everyday activities of a citizen. The technological advancements in computer science and telecommunications provide tools for securing and protecting data and at the same time provide the tools to the hackers. The objective is to keep the good guys one step ahead of the bad guys. The presentation will outline the great benefits for the citizen in having ones electronic health record readily available, and the ways for maximizing privacy and data protection.
