Research Arctic Centre Projects Science under Pressure

Survey

Reflecting on conditions, practices and institutional structures for sustainable polar research

From mid September till the end of October 2025 we will open a survey as an important milestone of the Science under Pressure initiative.

Why this survey?

With this survey we aim to better understand current conditions, institutional structures and practices of the Arctic and Antarctic academic enterprise. These findings can contribute to the planning for IPY-5 by reflecting on where we, i.e., the Arctic and Antarctic scholarly communities, are at right now, what institutional and funding structures we operate in, and what equitable, ethical and inclusive research approaches and best practices we would like to be followed during the IPY-5.

In this survey, we ask polar researchers a number of questions about the conditions they face as a polar researcher in their work environment. This questionnaire initiates a discussion that will be continued in the next years at a variety of polar science fora and aims to feed into structural reforms of academia in the polar research context.

For whom is this survey?

All polar researchers of any disciplinary background, gender, age and career stage (Indigenous or non-Indigenous scholars) who are directly involved in the academic institutional structures (employed or affiliated to universities or other research institutes) and who work in polar sciences.
