Research Questions

GUIDE-BEST

The GUIDE-BEST objectives leads us to the following overall research question of GUIDE-BEST:

How can pro-environmental behaviours of Antarctic tourists and guides be encouraged, thereby reducing negative environmental impacts?

To comprehensively address the aforementioned overarching research question, we will need to respond to five important subsidiary questions:

  1. How has Antarctic tourism developed over the last six decades, and how are these developments related to changes in the motivations, attitudes and behaviours of tourists? (WP1)
  2. What values, motivations and qualifications do Antarctic guides possess, and how do these shape tourist behaviour? (WP2)
  3. What factors influence the behaviour of tourists? (WP3)
  4. To what extent can a visit to the Antarctic facilitate pro-environmental behaviours and turn the visitor into an ambassador for Antarctic environmental protection? (WP4)
  5. How can the knowledge gained from addressing the above four questions be best incorporated into Antarctic tourism governance and management? (WP5)
