Indigenous Peoples and Arctic Research: Consequences for Dutch Research Policy

On the 16th of December, from 14-16h, the Arctic Centre of the University of Groningen will organise a seminar on changes in Indigenous engagement in Arctic research and the anticipated consequences for Dutch researchers.

In Arctic research, much attention is being paid to decolonial practices and co-production of knowledge. Ethical guidelines with regards to research carried out on Indigenous lands, waters and ice are being regularly revisited and revised with Indigenous priorities for research mind. In this seminar, we want to initiate a discussion how Dutch research practices in the Arctic can and should adjust to these changes. We hope this discussion can contribute to forthcoming polar policy documents from the Netherlands Polar Programme and the Dutch government.

The seminar will consist of several short presentations and ample time for discussions and questions.

See also the recordings of a recent seminar on Indignous Research Ethics.

Confirmed contributors to the seminar are:

  • Kees Bastmeijer (director Arctic Centre Groningen): chair
  • Annette Scheepstra and Sean Desjardins (researchers Arctic Centre Groningen): setting the scene
  • Ellen Marie Jensen (Independent Sámi and Indigenous Studies scholar and affiliate of the Austrian Polar Research Institute): Perspectives from an indigenous scholar and expert
  • Fleur van Crimpen (VU), Jorrit van Schot (Uni of Graz), and Silja Zimmerman (UU): PhDs reflecting on their experiences on doing research on indigenous lands, waters and ice
  • Renno Hokwerda (NWO/NPP): short reflections from a funding perspective
