Lipids in pottery from Pomor sites

Marjolein Admiraal, Sarah Dresscher

This proposal is focused on archaeological Pomor sites, with a special focus on pottery use. One of the remaining open questions in Dresscher’s PhD research is whether the Pomors consumed the marine mammals they hunted, or if they subsided on resources that were brought to Spitsbergen from Russia. This is a question that may be answered through organic residue analysis. Admiraal (lipids expert) aims to collect food residue samples from pottery at Pomor sites on the west coast of Edgeøya (and possibly also of blubber ovens of European whalers). Subsequently the Admiraal will analyse these samples at the University of York.
