Thin Film Lubrication Modeling

Description

Thin film lubrication is important in high impact applications of nanotechnology such as hard disk drives, where polymetric molecularly thin lubricant (MTL) films are utilized to protect the head-disk interface from accidental contact and corrosion. Going beyond the original application of hard disk drive lubrication, this research wil contribute to our fundamental understanding of thin film behaviour by investigating the transition between the hydrodynamic and solid contact regimes in the presence of roughness using analytical modelling, computational and experimental work. Applications where boundary lubrication is of critical importance, such as artificial synovial joints, offer a glimpse into possible future directions for this research and will benefit from the publisched results.
