Special circumstances

Are you suffering from a long-term illness or are personal circumstances making it difficult for you to study? If so, contact your study advisers as soon as possible.

Examples include:

• Illness
• Pregnancy
• Disability
• Exceptional family circumstances
• Educational force majeure

Why report?

• To prevent study delays, which is especially important for your Binding Study Advice (BSA).
• To discuss an alternative study plan, if necessary and possible.
• To learn about available support within the University.

Attendance requirements?
Also notify the lecturers of the relevant courses. Always check the specific rules for your courses.

Are you experiencing delays due to illness or special circumstances? If so, you may be eligible for financial support from the University of Groningen Student Support Fund under certain conditions.

What should you do?
 Report your study delay to your study adviser immediately.

• The study adviser will create a report for the fund.

• For delays of 15 ECTS or more, the study adviser will refer you to a student counsellor.

If you use exam facilities (organised by the Office for Student Affairs) and you fall ill, you must report your absence no later than one hour before the start of the exam to: voorzieningen-rechten rug.nl.

Have you suddenly fallen ill or are you facing special circumstances that prevent you from taking an exam? The Faculty of Law has specific rules for aberrant examinations. Read here about what you need to do, when you qualify, and how to submit a request.

You will only receive an aberrant examination if:

• You miss two consecutive opportunities for the same exam due to illness or special circumstances.

• There is a concrete and unreasonable risk of study delay.

Note: you are not entitled to two extra exam attempts.

Follow these steps to qualify for an aberrant examination:

• First attempt missed? Report your absence on the day of the exam to Student Service Law:
  - Email: studentenservice-law rug.nl
  - Phone: +31 (0)50 363 5727
• Second attempt missed? Report your absence again on the day of the exam, using the same method.

Did you miss two attempts due to special circumstances? You can submit a request for an aberrant examination by completing the web form for the Board of Examiners and include:

• A medical certificate (for illness)
• An official statement (for special circumstances)

Important: if you do not report your absence in the prescribed manner, you cannot claim an aberrant examination.
