Dutch educational system
The Dutch educational system at the University of Groningen emphasises independence, self-planning, and active participation. Classes, especially at the bachelor level, are often large, while working groups (limited to 30 students) are less common at the master level. Here’s what you need to know to succeed.
DIY attitude: take responsibility for your learning
In the Dutch system, you are responsible for your studies. The University provides clear expectations for each course via Brightspace or your lecturers. Keep track of your progress and ensure you stay on schedule with readings and assignments. Create a realistic study schedule and start preparing from day one to avoid last-minute stress before exams.
If you encounter difficulties, reach out to lecturers or your study advisers. Support is available, but you must ask for it. The Student Service Centre offers workshops for students struggling with study planning.
Exam preparation and examples
Lecturers often provide example or mock exams and questions on Brightspace, which can include model answers. Use these to practice.
When answering exam questions:

Strictly asnwer the question asked.

Be concise and legible.

Reference applicable laws, treaty articles, and case law.

Focus on quality, not quantity - only relevant answers earn points.
Exams specify the points allocated per question, so you know what to expect during grading.
Dutch grading system
The Dutch system uses a 1 to 10 scale:

10 = Outstanding

9 = Excellent

8 = Very good

7 = Good pass

6 = Pass
-
1-5 = Fail
Grades are absolute, not curved. The Faculty of Law does not use class rankings.
Honours distinctions

Cum Laude: awarded for an average grade of 8.0 or higher, including a thesis marked 8.0 or higher.

Summa Cum Laude: awarded for an average grade of 9.0 or higher, including a thesis marked 9.0 or higher.
Most assessments use full grades, except for the Bachelor’s thesis, seminars, and Master’s thesis, which may use half grades (e.g., 6.5, 7.5).
