Groningen Centre for Health Law

Health law is a multidisciplinary field - cutting across international, regional and domestic law, and resting on insights from (health) science. The Groningen Centre for Health Law (GCHL) engages with law as it informs the underlying determinants of health, and emphasizes a public and global health perspective. In our research and teaching, we analyze the role of human rights and the right to health in addressing access to quality healthcare services as well as disease prevention and health promotion.

Specific research themes in our Centre include health inequalities, disease prevention, environmental, mental and reproductive health, as well as vulnerability in healthcare settings.  We further explore the role of other fields of law such as international trade law, international investment law, international environmental law and EU law.

We foster PhD research in these areas and offer courses in health law at the LLM level (Dutch and English). This includes our course International Health Law and the specialized LLM Track Health and Technology Law. We organize a yearly Summer School in Groningen and/or Tanzania, as well as an annual Workshop on Research Methodologies for Global Health Law and Human Rights. We collaborate with the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in teaching and research.

More information about our members and research projects can be found on this website.
