The Faculty of Law launches podcast The Right to News

On 16 April 2025, the Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen will launch the first episode of its Dutch podcast The Right to News ("Recht op Nieuws"). The theme of the first episode is: “Can the government just ban organizations in the future?”
Threat to the constitutional state?
On 20 May, the Senate will consider a bill that would give ministers the power to ban 'subversive' organizations from one day to the next. Such a power does not appear to be without risk. Is the constitutional state at risk?
In the first episode of The Right to News, professor emeritus (and regular podcast host) Jan Brouwer and assistant professor Joep Koornstra discuss the legal and social implications of this bill.
Koornstra is an expert in this field: he obtained his doctorate in 2023 on the legal boundaries of freedom of association and the criteria for banning organizations. In the podcast episode, he explains, among other things, the exact content of the legislative proposal and the associated legal risks.

A new episode each month
The Right to News offers a monthly in-depth analysis of current legal issues. In each episode, Jan Brouwer talks to colleagues from the faculty about legislation and jurisprudence and their social impact. The podcast is in Dutch and is suitable for anyone interested in how the law affects our daily lives.
The first episode of the podcast can be listened to on Spotify from Wednesday 16 April via the link below:
