Jasper Verstappen wins JTS Early Career Researcher Prize 2025

Jasper Verstappen, Assistant Professor at our Faculty, is one of the four winners of the JTS Early Career Researcher Prize 2025. The prize is awarded by the Jantina Tammes School and this year’s theme was ’Collaborative Innovation’.

Interdisciplinary project on AI risks

With the JTS Early Career Researcher Prize, Verstappen will carry out an interdisciplinary research project. Titled "Developing and Deploying AI Safely and Responsibly: Navigating Novel AI Risks Through Interdisciplinary Collaboration", the project contributes to mapping out the risks surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and to a better understanding of how these risks can be managed. It builds on Verstappen’s previous research into the development of productive and responsible AI ecosystems in Singapore and Europe.

The project strengthens connections between various disciplines within our university and draws on relationships and expertise developed through earlier research. By organizing a series of lunch seminars, the project will highlight different perspectives on key AI-related themes. These insights will form the basis for a roundtable session at the Jantina Tammes School, involving policymakers and industry experts. In this way, the project supports the safe and responsible development and application of AI.

About the JTS Early Career Researcher Prize

Each year, the Jantina Tammes School awards the JTS Early Career Researcher Prize to support small-scale, short-term research activities within the UG that align with the school's focus areas. Up to five winners are selected annually, each receiving a grant of €2.500. The main prize winner also receives an additional €1.000, intended for the production of a short film or vlog to raise awareness about the winning project.
