Requirements at a glance

• Study background: at least 2 years of law studies completed before arrival in Groningen.
• Study load: 30 ECTS per semester (or 60 ECTS for a full year), spread across all teaching blocks.
• English: B2 minimum for Bachelor-level courses; C1 required for BA/MA and Master-level courses.
• Specialised courses: some require prior knowledge in specific areas of law.

Study background

You must have completed at least two years of law studies when you arrive in Groningen.

Background knowledge for specialised courses

European law courses (e.g. Internal Market Law, European External Relations Law)

• You need basic knowledge of EU law.
  If you have not taken an introductory EU law course at home, you should:
  1. Take Law of the European Union in Groningen, or
  2. Follow the recorded European Law lectures available via the Student Portal (under your courses).

Specialised International law courses (e.g. International Human Rights Law, International Health Law)

• You need to have completed a course in Public International Law (or an equivalent course at your home university).
• If you have not taken it, you can:
  1. Follow the recorded Public International Law lectures available via the Student Portal (under your courses).

Study load (ECTS) and planning your schedule

Expected workload

• 30 ECTS per semester
• 60 ECTS for a full academic year

Planning rule

• You must enroll in courses across all teaching blocks and balance your workload, preferably aiming for 15 ECTS per block

English level required

Minimum English levels

• Bachelor-level courses: B2
• BA/MA and Master-level courses: C1

Important

• Students below B2 cannot be accepted.
• The Exchange Office may deny entry to courses if a student’s English level could seriously hinder course progress, particularly in small, discussion-based courses.

Exemptions

• Native speakers are exempt from the English proof requirement.

Proof of English-language proficiency

Erasmus+ exchange students (KA103)

You DO NOT need an official English test.
Upload one of the following:

1. A letter from your exchange coordinator confirming your English level:

• B2 for Bachelor courses
• C1 for Master/BA-MA courses
  OR

2. A valid official language test (see “Accepted tests”).

Bilateral exchange partners (non-Erasmus)

You DO need an official English language test, unless:

• You are a native speaker, or
• You study in an entirely English-taught programme at your home university (a letter confirming your level of Englidh from the home university is required).

Erasmus+ ICM (KA107)

You must prove your English level is C1 (CEFR) with an accepted official language test.

Accepted official language tests

We accept:

• TOEFL;

• IELTS Academic;
• LanguageCert Academic;
• Pearson PTE Academic;
• Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE);
• Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE)

Validity: the test must be no more than 2 years old (still valid at the time you apply).
