ForensifAI signs exclusive licensing agreement with the UG

04 June 2026

ForensifAI has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with the University of Groningen, marking an important milestone in the commercialization of its AI-based image authenticity verification technology.

The company was founded by Prof. Dr. George Azzopardi and Dr. Guru Swaroop Bennabhaktula of the Information Systems group at the Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. The company has spun off after a successful research pilot study with the Dutch Vehicle Authority (RDW).

The licensing agreement enables ForensifAI to further develop and bring its technology to market, helping organizations verify the authenticity of digital images in an era increasingly shaped by AI-generated content.

Using unique camera fingerprints to verify image authenticity

Verifying the authenticity of digital images is becoming increasingly challenging due to the rise of technologies such as deepfakes, face morphing and AI-generated imagery. These developments pose significant risks for sectors that rely on trustworthy visual evidence, including identity verification, law enforcement and insurance.

While existing detection methods can identify many forms of manipulation, they often struggle to keep pace with rapidly evolving AI technologies.

ForensifAI takes a fundamentally different approach. The company's AI-based solutions leverage the unique fingerprint that every camera sensor leaves behind in an image. By analyzing these device-specific characteristics, the technology can determine whether an image was genuinely captured by a camera and whether it has been altered or manipulated.

Verifying authenticity where it matters most

Following a recent investment from Future Tech Ventures, ForensifAI is initially focusing on the identity verification market, where establishing the authenticity of driver's licenses, passports and national identity documents is critical.

Beyond identity verification, ForensifAI sees significant opportunities in forensic investigations, insurance and claims management, and media verification. To serve different customer needs, the company is developing both on-premise solutions for privacy-sensitive environments and cloud-based solutions for broader deployment.

Rebuilding and safeguarding trust in visual information

Co-founder George Azzopardi: "We are delighted to have signed this licensing agreement with the University of Groningen. It represents an important step in translating years of scientific research into practical solutions that address a growing societal challenge. We look forward to further rolling out our AI-based technologies and helping organizations verify the authenticity of digital images with confidence. In a world where manipulated and AI-generated content is becoming increasingly sophisticated, rebuilding and safeguarding trust in visual information has never been more important."
