Number of enrolments at the UG has slightly decreased
The University of Groningen has 37,137 enrolments as from October 2022. This is slightly less than last academic year, a 0.3 percent decrease. The number of new registrations mainly seems to be a correction of the increases that took place the last two years as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students might also be waiting to register because of the upcoming reintroduction of the basic grant. The UG’s national market share stabilizes to 10.1 percent.
This September, the UG welcomed 7.349 new registrations at a Bachelor’s degree programme. That is 136 less than last year, representing a 1.8 percent decrease. For most of the other universities in the Netherlands, enrolment in the Bachelor's degree programme is also falling. This year, the UG recorded 4,476 new registrations for a Master’s degree programme. That is 603 less than last year, which amounts to a 11.7 percent decrease. A national comparison shows that all universities have fewer Master’s registrations this academic year. However, the UG market share of total Bachelor and Master enrolment remains stable at 9.7 and 8.9 percent, respectively.
International students
The number of registrations of international students increases with 5.4 percent to 9,925 enrolments. That is almost 27 percent of the total number of enrolments. The majority of the international students are from the European Economic Area (EEA). About a quarter of the international students are from outside the EEA.
